The Geology And Tectonics Of The Bacan Region, Eastern Indonesia
Bacan is located in the zone of convergence between the Australian, Philippine Sea and Eurasian Plates. This study establishes a new stratigraphy for the region based on geological mapping, biostratigraphic dating, and geochemical analysis. The investigation reveals that the oldest rocks belong to the Sibela Continental Suite, likely of Palaeozoic age, derived from the Australian craton. The region features various arc volcanic and volcaniclastic formations, such as the Bacan and Tawali Formations, which were active from the Late Eocene until the Early Miocene due to the northward subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate. This volume provides critical insights into the complex tectonic evolution of Eastern Indonesia and its metamorphism history.
