The Symmetric Eigenvalue Problem
A comprehensive and essential text in numerical analysis, focusing on the symmetric eigenvalue problem. According to the author, "Vibrations are everywhere, and so too are the eigenvalues associated with them". As mathematical models are increasingly used across disciplines, the demand for calculating eigenvalues grows. The aim is to provide the mathematical knowledge necessary to understand the art of computing eigenvalues of real symmetric matrices, either finding all of them or just a few. The first nine chapters focus on matrices where similarity transformations are possible, with inexact arithmetic being the only error source, while the last five chapters address large sparse matrices, focusing on making and judging approximations. The original work was first published in 1980 by Prentice-Hall, and later republished as an unabridged, corrected edition by SIAM in 1998.
